Coal Creek Excursion
As part of our ‘How things change over time’ Inquiry topic this term, the Year 1 students recently travelled back in time to Coal Creek in Korumburra to see what life was like in the olden days.
Students discovered what school life was like for kids their age. They used ink and practiced their cursive writing and explored the historic buildings - they even saw a steam train!
They all had such a fun day and learning about the old school was definitely a highlight!
Some of the students have shared their reflections below.
“We went to Coal Creek. At the olden day school, I learnt that Victoria is named after Queen Victoria. Teachers used a cane in the olden days at school and they could whack you ten times!” – Ryder
“My favourite part about the excursion was when we did the cursive writing. We got to write with a long stick and dip it in ink. The lady picked me to stand in the corner at the back which is what they did in the olden days if you were naughty.” – Japreet
“My favourite part about our excursion was the writing and the curly writing they did in the olden days. We wrote and drew on slate. We also used ink to do the curly writing. I also liked the bus trip because it was kind of fun.” – Roop
“My favourite part of the excursion was the cursive writing with the ink because it was new, I haven’t done it before. I learnt that in the olden days the teacher could whack the kids with a cane if they did something naughty. That’s scary!” – Rabab
“We went to Coal Creek and saw the olden days school. In the school we learnt that the teachers could whack you with a cane, and we also learnt how to write with ink and do cursive writing. After that, we walked around and saw a court room from the olden days. We saw a theatre and a steam train. My favourite part was going in the court room.” – Nathan
Multiplication and Division
Year 1 students are currently learning about Multiplication (groups) and Division (sharing).
Class 1B spent time creating their own fruit and vegetable shop and learning about arrays (which are rows and columns).
We have been learning some new games too where we make arrays or show how sometimes numbers will share equally between groups and sometimes they do not.
