It was a photo finish that left everyone on the edge of their seats, but for our Year 4 student, Annabelle, the result couldn’t have been more exciting: second place in the 9/10 girls event at the State Cross Country Championships and a place on Team Vic.
Belle, who many of us know as a friendly and energetic Clyde Grammar student, will now represent Victoria at the National Championships on the Gold Coast in September. Her determination and grace in the face of fierce competition have made our school community incredibly proud.
Belle’s journey to this point hasn’t been easy. To reach State level, Belle needed to place highly at District, Division and Regional events. Outside of school, her training includes working with a running coach, strength sessions, and plenty of rest and good nutrition.
Belle’s love for running began early, “She may have skipped learning to walk and gone straight to running,” her mum jokes. She also plays basketball for fun and to build teamwork skills. But it’s clear that cross country is her true passion.
She finished just 0.7 seconds behind first place in the State final – a tough margin, but Belle took it all in her stride. “I was happy for the person who came first because we both worked hard and we are friends from Little Athletics,” she said, showing sportsmanship beyond her years.
Belle has a quote in her room that inspires her training:
“Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it or work around it.” – Michael Jordan.
That mindset, along with the support of her family, coaches, and our very own Mr Pretty, has helped her reach this incredible milestone. Her mum says, “It’s a very proud moment. Watching her take second place with humility and grace made us prouder than any medal ever could.”
Principal Mrs Leanne Evans says Belle’s journey is an inspiration to other students.
“Belle’s commitment, humility and kindness capture the values we hold dear at Clyde Grammar. We can’t wait to cheer her on when she races at Nationals.”
We’ll be following Belle’s progress closely and wish her the very best as she prepares to compete on the national stage. Go Belle!
