FOUNDATION – YEAR 2

It’s hard to believe we’re already halfway through Term 2! Our Foundation students have been making excellent progress in learning to read, with their sound recall becoming faster and more confident each day.

In Mathematics, students have been learning about addition and exploring how starting with the larger number can make counting on more efficient. They have also been investigating the animal kingdom, surprising us with what they already know while continuing to discover fascinating facts about living creatures.

Year 1 students have been strengthening their number knowledge by practising counting on and partitioning numbers into two parts. These strategies are helping students build a strong foundation for understanding addition and subtraction.

In Writing, students are learning to construct complete sentences with capital letters, finger spaces and full stops, and they are applying these skills across their learning. Spelling lessons have focused on digraphs, and students have been excited to identify and use them in their writing.

Year 2 students have been learning about their immediate community, including their homes and local surroundings. Through drawing diagrams and participating in class discussions, they have explored scale and compared features of their neighbourhoods with locations in other states and countries.

Students in Foundation A have been learning about the part-part-whole strategy in Mathematics. Using double-sided counters, they explored six different ways to represent the number five.
Foundation B students have been busy discovering number combinations using ten frames and LEGO cubes. They enjoyed recording their addition sentences and sharing their learning with peers.
As part of Integrated Studies, Year 1 students have been learning about families and the past. They created family trees and shared stories about their relatives, where they come from, and how families change over time.
In Art, students have been exploring how artists use lines to create patterns and movement. They experimented with different materials and techniques to produce creative and expressive artworks.
Year 2A students explored informal and formal measurement, using objects such as blocks, paperclips and rulers to measure everyday items.
This term, Year 2B has been examining how we are connected to the world around us. Students began by reflecting on their own homes and shared what makes each one special.

YEARS 3 – 5

Autumn has brought us beautiful blue skies and warm days, perfect for learning inside and outside the classroom. Our Year 3 to 5 students have taken full advantage of this season, with each year level heading out into the community to enrich their learning experiences.

Year 3 students embarked on a walking tour of Melbourne as part of their unit on maps and our city. Year 4 students visited Myuna Farm to learn about sustainability and recycling. Year 5 students attended a two-night camp at Mill Valley Ranch, where they engaged in a wide range of activities and built lasting memories.

We are grateful to our dedicated staff, parents and carers for supporting these experiences. These excursions and camps offer valuable learning opportunities and help build strong connections within our school community.

To complement their studies on Melbourne and mapping, Year 3 students explored the CBD on a guided walking tour. Starting at Federation Square, they learned about fossils in the pavers and moved on to Birrarung Marr to hear stories about the early days of colonisation. Students sampled native plants traditionally used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and discussed the significance of the Yarra River in shaping Melbourne. A highlight was learning about the peregrine falcons nesting in the city’s skyscrapers!

Year 4 students developed their debating skills through an engaging activity based on the novel The Wild Robot. They worked in teams to debate the question, “Are robots good for the environment?” This experience supported the development of critical thinking, teamwork and public speaking.

To honour Reconciliation Week, Year 4 students explored First Nations dot painting in Visual Arts. They learned about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and storytelling, creating artworks that expressed respect and connection.

Students in Year 5 share glowing reflections on their time at Mill Valley Ranch below:
