From the Classroom – September 2025

FOUNDATION – YEAR 2

As Term 3 draws to a close, our Foundation to Year 2 students and teachers are enjoying the final days of learning together. With no academic reports this term, there has been less formal testing and more time for learning experiences and classroom enjoyment.

Students from all year levels created heartfelt Father’s Day crafts to celebrate their dads and special people. We hope the recipients loved their gifts just as much as the students loved making them. The enthusiasm in classrooms was wonderful to see.

Foundation students have been exploring subtraction using a variety of strategies. One engaging activity involved popping balloons from our 100 Days of School celebration to visually demonstrate subtraction in action. Foundation B have been enjoying Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art projects alongside their buddies. Foundation A have been working collaboratively to prepare their very first assembly, to be held on the final Wednesday of Term 3.

Year 1 students have been investigating shapes and measurement. They explored length using informal units, such as Unifix blocks, to compare classroom objects. In writing, students have been experimenting with ‘Sizzling Starts’ to hook readers into their narrative stories. As part of their unit on Australian Environments, they are creating dioramas that showcase key environmental features.

It has been an exciting time in Year 2, with some special new additions to the classrooms: chicks!

As part of their inquiry unit on Animals, students studied the life cycle of a chick. Over two weeks, students observed 12 eggs hatch and watched the baby chicks grow. The excitement during the hatching process was shared widely across the school, with many classes visiting to join in the experience.

In addition, students selected an animal to research, built models using recycled materials, and are writing information reports about their chosen animals.

Working together harmoniously is a key focus in Foundation. In this Mathematics activity, students worked in small groups to draw collections and practised making space for one another so everyone could complete the task together. It was a wonderful opportunity to build their social and academic skills.
Foundation B have been exploring a range of strategies to solve subtraction problems. In one hands-on activity, Frogs on a Log, students drew frogs on a log and crossed out those that jumped into the pond. The visual approach helped reinforce their understanding of subtraction in a fun and engaging way.

Year 1 students have been using digital programs such as Wushka and Reading Eggs to support and enhance their reading development. These tools provide a wide selection of levelled books and interactive activities that build fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. Students enjoy progressing at their own pace and exploring new texts.

Year 1 students worked hard to create a heartfelt Father’s Day gift for their dads or special people. They made Shrinkies by drawing personalised designs on shrink film and watched with amazement as their artwork transformed in the oven into keyring-sized keepsakes. It was a fun and creative project, and students were excited to share their thoughtful gifts.

This term, Year 2 students have been busy designing and constructing their own animal models using recycled materials. With boxes, bottles, cardboard and plenty of imagination, students transformed everyday items into creative and unique creatures.

Last week, students in 2B enjoyed a special visit from Aussie Wildlife. They had the opportunity to observe a range of native animals up close, including a snake, a possum, a cockatoo and a wombat. Students shared their knowledge with Vince, the wildlife presenter, discussing features that make mammals unique, such as having a pouch. They also explored how to identify herbivores, carnivores and omnivores based on diet.

YEARS 3 – 5

Term 3 has flown by and before we know it, we’ll be stepping into the final term of 2025. Where does the time go? Each year level has been buzzing with energy as students are immersed in excursions, incursions and rich learning experiences.

A special congratulations to Belle for her outstanding performance in athletics. It has been wonderful to see our students rally behind her, their cheers echoing through the school as they watched her race on the TV. Moments like these truly highlight the strength of our community spirit.

It is uplifting to be reminded of the power of our shared values. With perseverance and commitment, who knows just how far each of us can go?

Year 3 students have been exploring the water cycle, learning how evaporation, condensation and precipitation work together to move water around our world. To test their understanding, they conducted an experiment using two mini jugs of water: one placed in the shade and the other on a sunny windowsill. After two days, students observed a drop in the water level of the sunny jug, bringing the concept of evaporation to life. They are now writing about each stage to create their own water cycle books.

Year 3 students have also been enjoying their exploration of 3D shapes. They have been asking thoughtful questions and investigating key concepts such as: What kinds of 3D shapes do we see most often in everyday life? What is the difference between a pyramid and a prism? Which 3D shapes would be best for building a house? It has been a hands-on and engaging way to deepen their understanding of geometry.

Year 4 students recently enjoyed a visit from renowned author, Wendy Orr. Best known for Nim’s Island, Rainbow Street Pets and her latest release, Honey and the Valley of the Horses, Wendy captivated the students with her storytelling. They were inspired by the writing techniques she shared and the creativity behind her books.

Throughout Term 3, Year 4 students researched famous world explorers. To conclude their learning, each student presented in character, dressed in a self-made costume and speaking in the first person as their chosen explorer. It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase their knowledge, creativity and confidence.

Last week, our Year 5 students enjoyed an exciting excursion to the Melbourne Zoo as part of their Science unit on Adaptations. The day was filled with opportunities to see a wide variety of animals up close and learn how each has developed special features to survive in its environment.

Students were fascinated to discover how giraffes use their long necks to reach food high in the trees. The zoo educators also guided us through a workshop where the children explored hands-on examples of structural and behavioral adaptations.

The excursion sparked many questions and deepened our understanding of the incredible ways living things have evolved to thrive in different habitats. It was a wonderful day of learning, discovery, and fun!
