From the Classroom

FOUNDATION – YEAR 2

In Foundation to Year 2, 2025 is well and truly underway. Happy smiles are visible in classrooms and in the playground. Our new Foundation students have settled in well at the beginning of their education journey at Clyde Grammar and they are enjoying exploring the play areas. Our students in the years above them have been kind and helpful and new friendships are forming as students adjust to their new classrooms and teachers. We look forward to a year full of excitement, learning and experiences that will build independence and resilience in all our students.

FA have been having lots of fun with maths activities. They made echidnas out of playdough and practised counting by adding spines to their fantastic creations.
FB have been building their counting and collaboration skills by closing their eyes and attempting to count how many items they can feel on our sensory boards.
The Year 1 students have been diving into the fascinating world of minibeasts. They have been exploring the unique characteristics, food and body parts of creatures like ladybugs, bees and snails. Did you know that most ladybugs have tiny hairs covering their bodies? Through reading, the students have gained a deeper understanding of these amazing creatures. In art, they have been bringing their minibeast knowledge to life by drawing vibrant and imaginative representations. They have demonstrated a wonderful mix of learning and creativity.
Our Year 1 students have also been enhancing their math skills by exploring number bonds to 10 using the game called ‘Chop.’ This engaging game has helped students develop a solid understanding of the number pairs that make 10. By playing with partners, they have been practicing their number recognition and improving their ability to quickly recall these number bonds. The results have been remarkable and their confidence and understanding in maths have grown significantly.
2A students have begun to explore procedure writing. This week, we had fun making magic wands and then wrote step-by-step instructions on how we created them.

The students in 2B have been exploring place value by playing games in class. They enjoyed identifying highest and lowest two-digit and three-digit numbers using dice, cards and MAB blocks.

YEARS 3 – 5

Welcome back to Clyde Grammar and the start of another action-packed school year. The beginning of the year is always a special time with returning children sharing adventures and reflecting on their normally all too short summer holidays. The first few weeks are such an important part of the year with expectations and routines being established that form the building blocks for the rest of the year.

At the start of any school year a sense of excitement prevails. Most children are eager to see their friends again and may not even notice that they have a new teacher. However, it is also normal to feel a little anxious and apprehensive about new classrooms, classmates and teachers. This can feel overwhelming for some children.

We want all children to feel safe and secure at school. Your children’s teachers and all the staff here at Clyde Grammar are a wonderful source of information, help and support if you or your child need it. Please, just ask.

I hope all our families and children are happy to be back at school for another amazing year. As a bonus, this year we also get to watch our new state-of-the-art gym being built, ready for us all to enjoy next year. Fun times!

In Integrated Studies, Year 3A has been exploring the theme of celebrations. For Valentine’s Day, students embraced the spirit of love and kindness by reading Love from the Crayons. Inspired by this story, they then created their own representations of what love means to them and shared some thoughtful explanations. It was a fun and heartwarming activity.
The students in 3B had fun making mini books that explain the different parts of speech, and now we know the difference between a verb and an adverb, and an adjective and a noun. We also know where to look in case we forget.
Year 4 students have settled in well and earlier this term, they headed out into the community for their Art lesson. They worked ‘en plein air’ — a French expression meaning ‘in the open air’ — drawing and illustrating outdoors.

Year 4 students have also been exploring whole numbers and place value during our mathematics sessions. Some of the activities included creating place value animals and playing card games. Using various objects and resources can help children understand the relationship between numbers and their associated place value.

Children in 5A worked together to explore the concept of the place value of large numbers. Inspired by stadiums from around the world, they built replica stadiums using MAB and calculated the place value of their structure. This was a fabulous hands-on lesson to solidify an important maths concept.
Our students in 5B have thoroughly enjoyed our new classroom novel, Super Sleuth, about a young girl who dreams of becoming a detective. While on holiday, she unexpectedly finds herself at the centre of a mystery that needs solving. Students were captivated by the suspense and drama of the story and as a class, they had the opportunity to illustrate their favourite character or scene, producing fantastic artwork.
